Chat Tor

Chat Tor sits on Rattlebrook Hill north-east of Lydford at 541 metres, a compact granite knob that rises from boggy moorland. It is worth visiting chiefly for its geology, showing a textbook example of lamellar bedding in Dartmoor granite. The outcrop itself is modest and easily overlooked beside nearby Sharp Tor and Hare Tor, but the granite formation is striking up close. Long distance views into the centre of the moor are strong from the summit. Access is from the moorland car park behind the Dartmoor Inn near Lydford, crossing the River Lyd and following paths between Brat Tor and Arms Tor, then south towards Great Links Tor. Note that the tor lies within or on the edge of the Willsworthy and Okehampton firing ranges, so check for red flags.
