Chat Tor stands at 541 metres in the heart of Dartmoor, a weathered granite peak surrounded by open moorland. The tor itself is modest in stature compared to some of Dartmoor's more dramatic summits, but its position gives good views across the high moor in all directions. On clear days you can see across the granite landscape that characterises central Dartmoor.
The walk to Chat Tor is straightforward, across typical Dartmoor terrain of heather, grass and stone. There are no particular difficulties of access or route-finding once you are on the moor. It is the kind of tor that rewards a visit not for any single dramatic feature, but for its place in the broader Dartmoor landscape and the moorland walking it offers.
