This scheduled monument is a cairn containing a stone cist, a small burial chamber built from stone slabs. It sits in the upland terrain south-west of the Drizzlecombe stone alignments, in an area rich with Bronze Age remains. The cist would have held cremated remains or grave goods, sealed beneath a mound of stone and earth. Time and weathering have exposed its structure, though enough survives to read the burial practice of people living on Dartmoor over three thousand years ago.
The monument sits within a concentration of ritual sites: standing stones, alignments, cairns and circles that speak to the importance of this moorland plateau to Bronze Age communities. Walking here, you move through a landscape deliberately shaped and marked by those who lived and died on the moor. The cist is small and easily missed among the rougher stones, but forms part of the story told by the wider monument complex.
