This scheduled monument is a cairn, a mound of stones built over a cist or stone burial chamber, dating to the Bronze Age when Dartmoor supported scattered farming communities. The cist would have held cremated remains or grave goods, speaking to beliefs about the afterlife and the importance of marking the dead in the landscape.
Today the site sits among the open moorland north-east of Drizzlecombe, part of a wider cluster of Bronze Age remains in this area. Like many cairns on Dartmoor, it has been subject to stone robbing and weathering over three thousand years, yet it remains a tangible link to the people who shaped the moor in prehistory.
