Hut circle, Watern Oke

This scheduled monument preserves a stone hut circle that forms part of a prehistoric unenclosed settlement on Dartmoor's high ground. The circular stone foundation is characteristic of Bronze Age domestic structures, when communities lived and worked across the moor. Later, during the medieval and post-medieval tinning period, the site was reused and adapted, with a tinners' building added to the landscape where miners extracted and processed tin.

Today the remains show the palimpsest of Dartmoor's long human occupation. The hut circle is a quiet marker of ancient settlement patterns, while the tinning evidence speaks to centuries of industrial activity on the moor. Visitors walking this part of Dartmoor encounter the physical traces of how people have lived and worked here across millennia.
