Stone alignments on Sharpitor

Walkhampton, Yelverton, Devon

Grid ref: SX 5591 7066

Part of Walkhampton →

  • Period: Late Neolithic to Bronze Age (Dartmoor's stone rows are generally dated to around 2500 BC)
  • Status: Two scheduled monuments (Historic England entries listed below)

A stone alignment is a row of upright stones, single or in pairs, usually leading to a cairn. North-west of Sharpitor, above the Walkham valley, two roughly parallel rows (one in pairs, with 41 visible stones, and one of single stones) lead from a round cairn. In the valley between Sharpitor and Leeden Tor a shorter double row, 26 m long, runs east from a flat-topped cairn, with a second cairn and a length of the Walkhampton Common reave.

“Strangers who have never experienced a real Dartmoor mist are apt to imagine that a map and a compass are all that are required to enable one to make one's way across the trackless waste.”
