Steng-a-Tor

Devon

Steng-a-Tor stands on the high central plateau of Dartmoor, a relatively modest summit by moorland standards but notable for its granite outcrops and the expansive views across surrounding bog and heather. The tor is reached across open moorland and makes for a straightforward walk from the roads and settlements that ring this part of the moor.

The approach is typical Dartmoor: rough ground, peat, and the sense of walking into genuine emptiness. The granite itself is weathered and compact, characteristic of the moor's backbone. This is not a dramatic destination, but one that rewards the walker with uncluttered moorland horizons and the particular quiet that comes with height and distance from roads.
