South Down

Devon

South Down is a quiet high point on Dartmoor's eastern reaches, its name marking its place in the landscape rather than announcing any dramatic summit. The tor itself is granite-built and uncluttered, rising from open moorland with that characteristic Dartmoor character: simple, weather-worn, and part of the continuity of the plateau rather than set apart from it.

From South Down the views open across the broad moorland to east and west, taking in the sweep of granite tors and rolling heather that define this part of the moor. It is good walking country, accessible from multiple directions, and appeals to those who prefer the quieter reaches of Dartmoor to its more famous summits.
