Shaugh Prior village cross

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1009187) describes a well-preserved wayside cross cut from a single piece of moderately coarse granite, set into a granite socket stone. Cross and socket are built into the west face of a hedge between a junction of minor roads and the entrance to the former vicarage, about 150 metres east of the parish church. Most of the east face is hidden against the hedge. The visible height is 1.7 metres. It lies in the parish of Shaugh Prior, about 1.8 km north-west of Wotter.

The shaft is rectangular, 0.33 by 0.25 metres, and tapers slightly to 0.31 metres under the arms. Shaft, arms and head all have chamfers about 50 millimetres wide, with crude stops under the arms. The arms run more or less north to south and are 0.65 metres across. The head has a flat top and rises 0.17 metres above them. The south arm and part of the head have been broken off in the past and repaired with an iron clamp across the top of the head, fixed with lead and cement. The socket stone shows 1.06 by 0.43 metres and 0.26 metres deep, and protrudes about 0.4 metres from the hedgebank into the road.
