Shaptor View preserves evidence of Dartmoor's industrial past, when granite extraction and transport shaped the landscape as profoundly as geology and weather. The tramway here carried stone from the moor's quarries down towards the valleys, a network of tracks that connected isolated workings to the wider world. Walking the route today, you can trace the worn grooves and embankments that guided laden trucks across the open moor.
The site offers insight into how Dartmoor sustained communities through stone working, and how the moor itself was engineered and exploited. The tramway cuts through characteristic moorland, heather, gorse, and granite outcrops, making it a good place to understand both the landscape's natural character and its human history intertwined.
