The Bala Brook rises on the southern moor and flows down towards the valley of the River Avon, which it joins in the wooded country near Shipley Bridge above South Brent. Its valley carries traces of Dartmoor's industrial past, including tracks and workings from the old tramways and mineral trades of the southern moor.
