Prehistoric Settlements

Settlement remains around Trowlesworthy Warren House

Grid ref: SX 5724 6490

  • Period: Bronze Age, with later use (Historic England calls the area a multi-period landscape)
  • Status: Five scheduled monuments (Historic England entries listed below)
  • Features: Ten stone hut circles, two enclosures, a cairn with a cist and a V-shaped gully

The warren sits on an older landscape. East of Trowlesworthy Warren House, on the slopes of Little Trowlesworthy Tor above Blacka Brook and the River Plym, Historic England schedules hut circle settlements, an enclosure that overlies an earlier hut circle, a cairn with an excavated cist and a V-shaped gully. The gully is the kind of feature usually read as a drain, though some may have been animal runs leading to vermin traps.

A separate, much larger Historic England entry (1020323) covers the whole prehistoric and historic landscape of the warren; it is described on the Trowlesworthy Warren page.

The five scheduled monuments

Historic England entryGrid referenceWhat survives
1014656SX 57455 65106An unenclosed settlement of eight stone hut circles terraced into the hillside in a tight cluster: five circular, 4 m to 6.5 m across, and three oval, 7 m to 10 m long; walls 1 m to 1.3 m wide.
1014615SX 57355 65142Two stone hut circles, 6 m across and 6.5 m by 4.3 m, beside an enclosure 14.5 m by 13 m that a rubble bank divides in two.
1014472SX 57176 64707A sub-rectangular enclosure 42 m by 36 m attached to an older stone hut circle (4.9 m across), with a later rectangular building and a V-shaped gully; part of the enclosure bank lies under a leat embankment.
1014473SX 57145 64751A round cairn 5.2 m across with a kerb of at least eight edge-set stones and an excavated cist (0.9 m by 0.5 m by 0.45 m deep); the capstone lies beside it.
1014474SX 57111 64858A V-shaped gully with arms 12 m and 17 m long and banks thrown up downslope; usually read as a drain, perhaps an animal run.

Grid references are from the Historic England entries. Historic England's own titles give a distance from the tor which does not always match its grid reference (one pillow mound is titled 210 m east of the tor but its grid reference puts it about 130 m west), so use the grid reference.
