Sandy Hole Pool

Dartmoor Forest, Devon

Sandy Hole Pool lies on the East Dart River in one of the emptier parts of the northern moor, upstream of Postbridge. Here the young river squeezes through a narrow granite passage known as Sandy Hole Pass and gathers into a deep, quiet pool over a bed of sand and gravel.

The channel is said to have been narrowed and deepened by hand in the old days to help flush cut peat down the river. It is a long walk in up the East Dart from Postbridge, past the waterfall, which keeps it wild and little visited.
