North Bovey village cross

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1009179) describes the well-preserved head, arms and much of the shaft of a medieval wayside cross cut from one piece of fairly fine-grained granite. It is cemented onto a small rectangular granite block that has been placed over an ancient octagonal socket stone, at the south-west end of North Bovey village green. It is listed Grade II. The arms run more or less north to south. It lies in the parish of North Bovey, about 1.9 km north-east of Easdon Tor and 2.5 km south-west of Moretonhampstead.

The ancient part, shaft, head and arms, is 1.27 metres high. The shaft is about 0.4 by 0.25 metres at most, with a little stone broken off the bottom of the north face and a poorly filled crack at the bottom of the south face. The arms are 0.65 metres across, each projecting 0.12 metres and 0.24 metres deep, and the head rises 0.14 metres above them. The modern block under the shaft is 0.5 by 0.31 metres and 0.25 metres deep. The socket stone is square, 0.9 metres each way and 0.22 metres deep, with its top corners cut away to make it octagonal and the south-east corner broken off. It has a bevelled south edge and holes partly filled with iron on the west and north sides. The socket hole is 0.4 by 0.38 metres. Some restoration was carried out in 1829.
