Higher Combe cross: a wayside cross in a field 250m east of Higher Combe

Lustleigh, Moretonhampstead, Devon

Grid ref: SX 7776 8253

Part of Lustleigh →

Higher Combe cross is a wayside cross of medieval or later date, positioned in open moorland east of the settlement from which it takes its name. These crosses were common features of Dartmoor's landscape, marking routes, boundaries and places of gathering or worship. This one stands in isolation, a weathered marker of the old ways that crossed the moor.

Visitors will find a stone cross in a field setting, part of the scattered heritage of Dartmoor's interior. Its age and original purpose remain uncertain, as is typical of many Dartmoor crosses, but its presence speaks to centuries of human movement and activity across these high, open spaces.
