Middle Staple Tor

Middle Staple Tor rises to around 452 metres above the Middle Walkham Valley, the central outcrop of the three Staple Tors. Its granite core contains a collapsed avenue, with the main rockpile bunched on the eastern side. The tor sits near the metamorphic aureole, a ring of non-granite rock that has created unusual xenoliths or knobs protruding from the granite faces. Large joints cut through the most solid sections, rewarding a careful climb with panoramic views southward. The eastern flank reveals a spectacular ruin of massive clitter, largely overlooked by visitors. Nineteenth-century moormen worked here extracting granite cobbles for the streets of Tavistock and Plymouth, leaving traces still visible on the slopes.
