Cleave Farm is a modest ruin set into the open moorland, its remaining stone walls and foundations speaking of a hardscrabble existence far from shelter. Like so many upland farms on Dartmoor, it was eventually abandoned as the economics of moorland farming shifted and families moved toward easier ground. The site sits exposed to the elements, with views across the rolling plateau that defined the lives of those who worked this land.
The ruins require a willingness to explore off the main paths, rewarding those who venture out with a tangible sense of Dartmoor's human history, the cleared fields, the walls, the stubborn attempt to make a living from this bleak and beautiful place. There is something quietly moving about standing among the stones, imagining the work and the seasons that once sustained a household here.
