The Longstone stands on Piles Hill, at the northern end of the Butterdon Hill stone row, which runs for about a kilometre and is the second longest row on Dartmoor. It is a coarse, pinkish granite stone about 2.5 m long, rectangular in section and tapering, with a base that was squared and broken by drilling.

Beside it, to the north east, stands a boundary stone put up in 1803 and made of the same granite, and the row was damaged that year when the northern stretch was destroyed and drilled boundary stones were set into the line. Lethbridge suggested the Longstone was once about 4.5 m long. The row has been adopted as the Harford Moor and Ugborough Moor common boundary.

Hobajon's Cross lies about 300 m south of this end of the row. Do not confuse this with the Longstone on Shovel Down, which is a taller upright menhir in the north of the moor, or with the Langstone on Langstone Moor.
