Piles Hill is a 387 m hill on the south moor, part of the line of hills that runs from Western Beacon above Ivybridge through Butterdon Hill to Piles Hill and on to Three Barrows. It has no military activity.
The views west are excellent, down to Plymouth Sound, and sunsets over Penn Beacon can be good. The hill marks the end of the Butterdon Hill stone row, about a kilometre long and the second longest on Dartmoor, which finishes at the Longstone on Piles Hill. The row has been adopted as the Harford Moor and Ugborough Moor common boundary, and a boundary stone put up in 1803 stands near the Longstone.

Go deeper with Dartefacts
Dartefacts is a database of Dartmoor sites with far more close-up detail than we can show here, and it is the best place to go deeper. Dartefacts is free to use, and nobody has to pay to look things up. If you want more, a yearly subscription adds 10-figure grid references, map zoom down to 1:25,000 and lists to tick off the places you have visited, and it helps keep the site going. We would encourage you to subscribe.
