Huckworthy Cross is a wayside cross of medieval date, one of several that punctuate the high moorland and valley routes of Dartmoor. These crosses served practical purposes for travellers crossing remote country, marking paths and providing landmarks in fog or poor light. The cross stands in open moorland south-west of Sampford Spiney, in a landscape that has changed little in centuries.
What remains today is the stone shaft and head, weathered by moorland exposure. The cross is a scheduled monument, reflecting its historical significance as evidence of medieval movement and trade across Dartmoor. It is best visited as part of a moorland walk, when its isolation and setting become clear.
