Historic settlement near Shavercombe Tor

This scheduled monument preserves evidence of historic settlement and land use on the northern slopes of Shavercombe Tor. The site shows traces of a former community, with earthwork remains of buildings and associated field systems that speak to how people once worked and lived in this upland landscape. Tin openwork evidence indicates mining activity, reflecting the mineral wealth that drew people to work Dartmoor's slopes across the medieval and early modern periods.

Today the site exists as earthworks and landscape features across moorland and pasture. A walk across the area reveals the palimpsest of use: terraced fields, settlement platforms and the characteristic pits and waste heaps of tin extraction.
