This is the abbey church of Buckfast Abbey, not a village parish church. It was built from 1907 for the Benedictine monks who had set up a house here in 1882, on the foundations of the medieval Cistercian abbey church (apart from the east end), to designs by F. A. Walters. Most of the work was done by a small group of monks working under a master mason.
It is built of local grey limestone with Ham Hill stone dressings and a copper roof, in a style Pevsner called a mixture of English Cistercian and French early Gothic. It has a central crossing tower and, at the east end, a Blessed Sacrament chapel added in 1965 to designs by Paul Pearn.
