This granite cross stands in a paddock beside the lane between Quick Bridge and Tolchmoor Gate in Cornwood parish, north of Tinpark Farm stables and opposite the entrance to Cholwich Town Farm. Books call it Cholwich Town Cross, Ridding Down Cross or Tinpark Cross, but it is one cross. It is about 1.67 m tall, with a circumference of 1.11 m and an arm span of 36 cm, reduced by damage.

The Rev. W. C. Lukis and J. D. Poole noticed it years ago serving as a gatepost, and a lead-filled hole and the hanging of an iron gate on its south west side show where. It was rescued in 1969 and set up free standing where it stands now. Its crude form suggests a medieval date, perhaps as old as Cholwich Town itself, which may go back to the 12th century. It became a scheduled monument in 1974 and was added to the Heritage at Risk Register in 2010 because of nearby china clay working.

A second cross, also used as a gatepost at Cholwich Town Farm, was salvaged by the National Park Authority in 1969 and stood on a bank by the entrance, but it disappeared around 1978. A small stone beside the surviving cross, once taken for a second shaft, has been identified as a piece of an octagonal window mullion.

“It is the furze which is the glory of the moor, with its dazzling gold and its honey breath, fighting for existence against the farmer who fires it every year, and envelops Dartmoor in a cloud of smoke from March to June.”
