Cholwich Town contour reave

This scheduled monument consists of a contour reave, two enclosed areas, and a cairn, representing the remains of Bronze Age activity on Dartmoor. The reave is a low stone bank that follows the slope of the land, likely built to manage livestock or define boundaries within the early farming landscape. The two enclosures beside it suggest domestic or pastoral use, while the cairn may mark a burial or significant point in the settlement.

Today, the site sits on open moorland where these ancient features remain visible as low earthworks and stone constructions. Walking here, you encounter the physical evidence of how people lived and organized their land thousands of years ago, when Dartmoor supported a more settled population than it does now. The contour reave is a distinctly Dartmoor feature, found nowhere else in Britain.
