This scheduled monument is a burial mound, or barrow, of Bronze Age origin, likely built between around 2000 and 700 BCE when the upland moors of Dartmoor were more actively settled and used. Such earthworks are common across Dartmoor, marking places where communities laid their dead to rest and created enduring landmarks in the landscape.
Today the barrow survives as an earthen mound on open moorland near Shaugh Cross.
