Scorriton

Scorriton is a small village on the southern edge of the moor, a little below Holne, with the open ground of Scorriton Down rising behind it and the Dart valley below. It is a farming place of granite cottages and lanes, with an inn and not much else, and it sees a fraction of the visitors who pass through the villages a few miles east.

Its value is as a way onto a quiet part of Dartmoor. Tracks climb from the village onto Holne Ridge and towards Ryder's Hill, the highest point of the southern moor, across ground marked by leats and old tin workings and very little else. Below, the Mardle and the Dart run through steep woodland that is beautiful in autumn. For walkers who prefer their moor without a car park, Scorriton is a good place to start.
