Scorriton

Scorriton, also spelt Scoriton, is a small village in Dartmoor National Park, about three miles north west of Buckfastleigh, tight under the eastern rim of the moor. It is made up of roughly a dozen stone cottages, four council houses and a central farm. The Tradesman's Arms is the village pub and sits on the Two Moors Way, at the end of the Ivybridge to Scorriton stretch. It faced closure in 2008, and four regulars bought it and reopened it.

Scoriton Country Show and Sports has been held since 1949, on August Bank Holiday Monday, to raise money for local charities. It includes a two mile cross country run, competitions for vegetables, flowers and cookery, and an evening ceilidh, and its own website counts more than 1,000 visitors the year before. The village hall holds a black tie Christmas ball.

On the moor above the village is Huntingdon Warren, where pillow mounds survive from a rabbit warren. Christopher Somerville's walk there notes that the warrener was troubled by poachers from the Red Lake china clay works. Near it is Mattins Corner, a stone lined hollow with a cross cut by the botanist Keble Martin in 1909, and the much older Huntingdon Cross, of unknown age. No dated history of the village itself has turned up.
