Bonehill

Bonehill is a scatter of houses on the hillside above Widecombe-in-the-Moor, where the lane climbs steeply out of the valley towards Bovey Tracey. The hamlet takes its name from the rocks that stand immediately above it, and the setting, with open moor on the doorstep and the Widecombe valley spread out below, is as good as any on the eastern moor.

Bonehill Rocks are among the most popular granite outcrops on Dartmoor, largely because you can park almost beneath them and be scrambling within a minute, which makes them a favourite with families and with climbers learning to boulder. Beyond them the ground rises to Bell Tor, Chinkwell Tor and Honeybag Tor, a fine ridge with big views, and the walk along it and back down into Widecombe is one of the best short days on the moor.
