Two hut circles

These two hut circles form part of an enclosed Bronze Age settlement on the south-east slope of Conies Down Tor. The stone foundations are typical of upland dwellings from the second millennium BC, when communities cleared and used these high moorland areas for seasonal or permanent habitation.

Visiting today, you can trace the circular stone walls that once supported timber or turf roofing. The settlement's position on the slope offers views across the moor and would have provided access to water and grazing. The site sits within the wider Bronze Age landscape of Dartmoor, where numerous such settlements and field systems suggest intensive use of the uplands in prehistory.
