Two hut circles near Deadlake Foot

These two hut circles, located on the open moorland south of Deadlake Foot, are likely remnants of Bronze Age settlement on Dartmoor. Stone circles of this kind were domestic structures, their foundations marked by rings of stone that once supported timber or turf walls and conical roofs. They sit within the wider pattern of prehistoric occupation that shaped much of the central moor.

Today the circles are subtle earthworks among the heather and grass, best read in low light or after rain when shadows reveal their form. They are a Scheduled Monument, protected for their archaeological importance. Walking this part of Dartmoor, you move through a landscape layered with such sites, evidence of a moor that was more densely inhabited in prehistory than many assume.
