Two enclosures and a cairnfield near Crazy Well Pool

Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1008650) describes two irregular enclosures and 22 clearance cairns on a gentle south-facing slope above Newleycombe Lake. The scheduling falls in two areas divided by a leat. It lies in the parish of Walkhampton, about 0.6 km south of Cramber Tor and 3 km south of Princetown.

The eastern enclosure, most of which is south of the leat, is 114 metres north-west to south-east by 54 metres inside, bounded by a rubble wall up to 1.5 metres wide and 0.4 metres high, except on the south where it is a lynchet 1.5 metres wide and 0.7 metres high. Seventeen cairns lie inside it and two are built into the wall. Fifteen of them are roughly round, 2 to 4.3 metres across and 0.2 to 0.7 metres high, and two are oval, 5 by 2.6 metres and 6 by 3.5 metres. Three more round cairns, 3 to 3.8 metres across, lie north of the enclosure. A small enclosed area, 16 metres by 12 metres, sits in the south-east corner. The second enclosure, north of the leat, is 94 metres east to west by at least 60 metres, with a rubble bank 1 metre wide and 0.3 metres high. Its southern and part of its western walls survive only as buried features.

The Devonport Leat cuts through both enclosures, a channel 2 metres wide and 1.2 metres deep with a bank of upcast on the downslope side. A stone-faced overflow channel in that bank is now blocked. The leat was built in 1793 by the Plymouth Dock Waterworks company to carry over two million gallons of Dartmoor water a day to Devonport, and its upper length still feeds the Dousland treatment works. The leat itself is excluded from the scheduling.
