Stone hut circle on Down Ridge 480m south west of Saddle Bridge

This hut circle sits on the slopes of Down Ridge, south west of Saddle Bridge, and dates from the Bronze Age when farming communities settled on Dartmoor's higher ground. The circular stone foundations mark where a roundhouse once stood, its walls built from the moorland granite that lay to hand. Such structures are common across Dartmoor and show how people lived and worked in this landscape thousands of years ago.
Today the site is largely overgrown by heather and grass, but the stone walls are still traceable on the ground. The location offers views across the moor and speaks to the choices these ancient farmers made about where to build and farm. The hut circle is a Scheduled Monument, protected for its archaeological importance in understanding Dartmoor's past.
