Stone hut circle 930m ENE of Big Pond

This is a stone hut circle, the remains of a dwelling built during the Bronze Age when Dartmoor's high moorland was more extensively settled than it is today. The circular or oval foundation of stone rubble marks where a prehistoric family's home once stood. Such hut circles are found across Dartmoor in small groups and isolated instances, evidence of pastoral communities who farmed and herded stock on the moor thousands of years ago.

Today the site sits among open moorland, a subtle earthwork that rewards close attention. Visiting means walking the moor itself, reading the landscape as Bronze Age people knew it. The hut circle is a Scheduled Monument, protected for its archaeological importance. Its remote location, near Big Pond, speaks to how Dartmoor's settlements were distributed across the high ground where water and grazing were available.
