Settlement, Wigford Down S of Durance

Grid ref: SX 5488 6532

This is a Bronze Age settlement site on the open moorland south of Durance, on Wigford Down. The earthworks and structural remains visible today are evidence of domestic life in the prehistoric period, when scattered communities occupied the higher ground of Dartmoor.

The site sits within the characteristic moorland landscape that has changed little in its essentials since prehistory. For walkers crossing this part of Dartmoor, it represents a tangible connection to the people who lived and worked here thousands of years ago, leaving behind the traces of their homes in stone and soil.
