Historic England's scheduling record (list entry 1017481) describes a round cairn on the summit of Hangingstone Hill: a flat-topped stony mound 17 metres across and 1.6 metres high. A shallow pit in the centre suggests early partial digging or robbing, and a number of edge-set stones in the mound suggest that some original construction survives.
The peat mound against its eastern side and the military observation post on its south side are not part of the scheduling.
The Whitehorse Hill peat mound, where a Bronze Age burial was found, lies about 700 metres to the north and can be seen from this cairn, according to the published report on that site.
