Cairns with cists near Shavercombe Brook

This is one of several cairns scattered across the moorland south of Shavercombe Brook, on the high plateaux of central Dartmoor. Built during the Bronze Age, these stone mounds contain cists, rectangular stone burial chambers where the dead were placed with grave goods. The cairns remain as low, stony mounds on the open moor, part of the visible archaeology that marks this landscape as a place of settlement and ritual activity thousands of years ago.

Walking among these monuments, you encounter Dartmoor as it was known to Bronze Age communities, when the moor supported scattered populations and their burial practices shaped the land we see today. The cairn field here is one of many such clusters across Dartmoor, a reminder of how densely the prehistoric moor was used and valued.
