Milestone N of Lower Beardon

Devon

This milestone stands beside the road running north from Lower Beardon, one of many such markers that once guided travellers across Dartmoor and the surrounding moorland. Dating from the turnpike era, these simple stone posts served a practical purpose in an age before modern signage, showing distances to nearby settlements and major towns.

Today the milestone remains in place, weathered by centuries of moorland weather. It offers a quiet reminder of how Dartmoor's roads evolved and how people once navigated these upland routes. The surrounding landscape retains much of its character, making it a worthwhile spot to notice on a walk through this part of the moor.
