This scheduled monument preserves the earthwork traces of medieval homesteads scattered across the moorland south of Meldon quarry. The site reflects a period when Dartmoor's higher ground supported settled farming communities, their houses and enclosures still legible in the turf and stone. The homesteads represent a landscape reshaped by people who cleared and managed these upland commons centuries ago.
Walking the site today, you will find low banks and shallow depressions that mark old field boundaries and dwelling sites. The remains are modest but readable to the patient eye, set within the open moor where wind and weather have worn them into the hillside. They stand as quiet evidence of medieval life on Dartmoor, before higher ground was largely abandoned to common grazing.
