Black Down

Black Down is a rounded granite tor set in the open heart of western Dartmoor, rising to 410 metres above sea level. The peak itself is understated, lacking the dramatic rock formations of some of Dartmoor's higher tors, but its exposed position rewards the walker with clear views across the surrounding moorland and towards the distant ridges beyond.

The approach across open moor is straightforward and typical of Dartmoor walking: pathless or lightly tracked depending on the weather and season. The granite character of the tor is visible but weathered, the stone shaped by the moor's exposure rather than rising in sharp outcrops. From the summit, the sense of space and emptiness is marked. Black Down repays a visit most in clear conditions, when the landscape opens up properly.
