King's Tor

King's Tor rises to 401 metres on the open plateau of central Dartmoor, a granite outcrop that commands the moorland around it without dominating the horizon. The tor itself is modest in stature, a weathered stack of granite blocks that has drawn walkers and travellers for centuries. The rock is pale and fractured, typical of Dartmoor granite, and worth examining for the patterns of jointing that give the stone its character.

The approach is across accessible moorland, making it a straightforward walk from several directions. Views from the summit reach across Dartmoor's rolling plateau to distant ridges and the moor's rim. On clear days the granite scarps of other tors punctuate the landscape, marking the spine of the high moor. The area around King's Tor is open country, with few trees, and the walking is easy enough for most seasons.
