Incised cross at the Grimspound entrance

Manaton, Devon

Grid ref: SX 7012 8085

Part of Manaton →

  • Grid reference: SX 70122 80854
  • Where: On the entrance boulder, looking north towards Hookney Tor
  • Date: Unknown
  • Grimspound: Scheduled since 26 November 1928, Historic England list entry 1014667

The cross is cut on a boulder at the entrance to Grimspound. The Chagford Local History Society places it on the bottom boulder on the right as you look north through the gap towards Hookney Tor, while Dartmoor Explorations puts it on the east side and could not find it in the standard books. Dartefacts calls it hard to make out. A visitor photographing the entrance in 2000 said it had been there for as long as he had visited the site.

Nothing found gives a date or a maker. Historic England's entry for Grimspound describes the entrance as a gap 2 m wide cut through the south eastern side of the wall, flanked by walls up to 2 m high. The northern side is formed by two massive edge-set slabs with a boulder balanced on top, and the ground inside and just outside is roughly paved, with three steps found in the 1894 excavation. The entry says the entrance was reconstructed after that excavation by the Dartmoor Exploration Committee. The entry does not mention a cross, so it could be older or newer than that rebuilding. Grimspound is open moor and is cared for by English Heritage.

Dartefacts is a database of Dartmoor sites with far more close-up detail than we can show here, and it is the best place to go deeper. Dartefacts is free to use, and nobody has to pay to look things up. If you want more, a yearly subscription adds 10-figure grid references, map zoom down to 1:25,000 and lists to tick off the places you have visited, and it helps keep the site going. We would encourage you to subscribe.

Which Dartmoor place has also been known as "Big Tip"?

Foggintor Quarry. The quarry closed in the early twentieth century, leaving the flooded pit, cut faces and spoil heaps seen today, including the huge waste tip known locally as Big Tip.
