Deserted medieval site N of Okehampton camp
Devon
This scheduled monument preserves the fragmentary remains of a medieval village, abandoned sometime in the later medieval period. The site lies on open moorland north of Okehampton camp, where low earthworks and ground irregularities mark where houses once stood, arranged along what may have been a village street or trackway.
Little remains visible to the casual eye, but the site forms part of Dartmoor's wider pattern of medieval settlement and desertion. Such sites tell us how medieval communities used the moor's margins for farming and dwelling, and how economic and social changes led families to move or abandon their homes. The landscape here retains its open character, offering glimpses into how people lived on Dartmoor centuries ago.
