Church of St Michael, Chagford

St Michael's in Chagford's High Street appears to be a complete 15th-century rebuild of an earlier church, with work on the Lady Chapel recorded in the churchwardens' accounts for 1482. A major renovation about 1888 was followed by lesser works to 1925. It is granite ashlar throughout, with a tall three-stage tower, full-length aisles and a two-bay stone-vaulted south porch.

Historic England names the table tomb in the sanctuary of Sir John Wyddon (died 1575), with early Renaissance carving, as the best feature. On the sanctuary steps is the grave slab of Mary Whiddon, who died in 1641 and is traditionally said to have died on her wedding day. The roof bosses include the spiral symbol of the Gorges family and the tinners' mark of three rabbits. The chancel screen of 1925 recreates a 15th-century design in memory of a young flying officer, Noel Hayter-Hames.
