Cairn and cist on Chittaford Down, 300m north of Archerton

This scheduled monument consists of a cairn and cist, the remains of a Bronze Age burial site set on the open moorland of Chittaford Down. The cist, a stone-built burial chamber, would once have been covered by the cairn, a mound of stones that accumulated as successive burials or ritual deposits were made. Such monuments are scattered across Dartmoor, marking places of significance to Bronze Age communities who lived and worked on the moor.
Today the site survives as earthwork and stone features in the landscape, part of the dense archaeological record that makes Dartmoor a nationally important heritage area. Visitors exploring this part of the downs will find themselves among Bronze Age remains that have endured for over three thousand years, connecting the present moorland to its deep past.
