Cairn with cist S of Royal Hill

This is a scheduled monument consisting of a cairn, a burial mound of stones, with a cist or stone burial chamber at its heart. The monument dates to the Bronze Age, when such cairns were constructed across Dartmoor as graves for the dead. The cist would have held human remains, protected by carefully placed stone slabs.
Today the site sits among the open moorland south of Royal Hill, part of the wider archaeological landscape of burial monuments that mark Dartmoor's ancient past. Visiting walkers will find the remains of the cairn itself, a scattered mound of stones that tells the story of ritual and remembrance across more than three thousand years.
