Bowl barrow at Emmets Post

This bowl barrow is a Bronze Age burial mound, likely built between around 2000 and 1000 BC when Dartmoor was more densely settled than it is today. The mound itself is the visible remains of a funeral monument, originally constructed to mark the burial of one or more individuals of status. Bowl barrows are among the most common Bronze Age monuments on Dartmoor, and their survival across the centuries speaks to the stability of the moorland landscape.
Today the barrow sits in open moorland near Emmets Post, a landscape that has remained largely pastoral and wild. Walking across this part of the moor, you are moving through a terrain layered with human history. The barrow is a Scheduled Monument, protected for its archaeological importance and for what it tells us about Dartmoor's ancient communities and their relationship with the landscape they inhabited.
