A blowing house is a small, roughly built structure that processed tin ore using water power and bellows to smelt metal from stone. This scheduled monument stands north of Yealm Steps on the open moor, evidence of Dartmoor's long history as a tin-producing landscape. Such sites are scattered across the high ground where streams offered the power needed to drive the work.
What remains today is modest but legible to anyone who knows what to look for: stone ruins marking where tinners once laboured to extract and refine ore.
