Two stone hut circles at Frenchbeer Rock are the remains of Bronze Age settlement on the open moor. The circular stone foundations once supported round houses, typical of prehistoric Dartmoor where pastoral communities grazed livestock and grew crops on the high ground. The huts are part of a larger coaxial field system, a distinctive pattern of parallel field boundaries that stretch across the moorland, showing how people organised their land for farming.
Today you will find the hut circles as low stone rings among the heather and grass, their age and isolation giving them a sense of quietness. The field system is harder to read on the ground but visible as low banks and ridges. Standing here, you are looking at one of Dartmoor's most enduring traces of human settlement, a landscape shaped by Bronze Age hands that has barely changed in three thousand years.
