Travels in Georgian Devon

byJohn Swete; edited by Todd Gray and Margery Rowe

1997 · Devon Books (in association with Halsgrove, Tiverton)

ISBN 0861149181 (vol 1);

Travels in Georgian Devon: The Illustrated Journals of the Reverend John Swete, 1789-1800 is a four-volume edition of the travel journals of John Swete, edited by Todd Gray with Margery Rowe. Volume 1 appeared in 1997 and volume 4 in 2000, published by Devon Books, the first volume in association with Halsgrove of Tiverton.

The journals record Swete's tours of Devon with his watercolours; they began in 1789 with a tour across Dartmoor into North Devon. The edition reproduces the illustrations alongside the text, and commentary on the gentry's houses and gardens, local industries and farming methods is a feature of the work.

The book is in copyright and out of print as a set, so the listing is for borrowing or buying only; there is no free online text. The original journals are held by the Devon archive service at the Devon Heritage Centre in Exeter (reference 564M, seventeen surviving volumes), and a note to that effect is on the person listing.
