Three hut circles on south part of Wigford Down

These three hut circles lie on the southern slopes of Wigford Down, part of the extensive Bronze Age settlement landscape that covers much of Dartmoor. The circular stone foundations mark the homes of people who lived on the moor perhaps 3500 to 4000 years ago, when the climate was warmer and more of the moorland was farmed and inhabited.
Today they form shallow depressions in the turf, visible in the right light and season. Like so many of Dartmoor's cairns, stone rows and settlements, they tell the story of a densely populated prehistoric landscape, since largely abandoned to open moorland. The site sits within a scheduled monument area, reflecting its archaeological importance.
