Thornworthy Tor

Thornworthy Tor stands on a prominent hill just north of Fernworthy Reservoir, its granite summit dominated by a large area of bedding with numerous broken outcrops, particularly on the west side where close horizontal joints create fissured rock faces. The most notable feature is a recorded logan-stone of considerable interest. A rock shelter on the south side of the summit offers protection from northerly winds. The tor sits within a newtake wall on its west, north and east sides, and on clear days the tor provides one of the best vantage points on Dartmoor for viewing Fernworthy Reservoir, with tantalising views north to Cosdon Beacon, Watern Tor and other distant hills. The easiest approach is an out-and-back walk from the reservoir path, though boggy ground surrounds the tor to north and east.
