Hut circle settlement near Gartaven Ford

This scheduled monument preserves the remains of a prehistoric settlement dating to the Bronze Age. The site comprises a cluster of stone hut circles, the foundations of roundhouses where people once lived, alongside cairns and the traces of an organized field system. These earthworks are typical of Dartmoor's densest concentration of prehistoric settlement remains.

Today the site lies on open moorland, scattered among heather and grass. The hut circles and cairns form low stone rings that catch the eye when the light is right. The field boundaries, created by clearing stones from cultivation plots, run between the dwellings. Walking the site gives a strong sense of how Bronze Age communities ordered their landscape on the moor, working the thin soils and pasturing livestock in a place that has changed little in its essential character.
